January 2012 The construction of Orion, the new - second - main building for Wageningen University and Reseach Center (WUR), is well under way by now. Last week main contractor Heijmans finished installing the steel construction of the main auditorium on the second and third floors. This remarkable hall will seat an audience of almost 800 people and can be subdivided instantly into six seperate lecture halls. The structure already reveals a remarkable space with lots of character, that - considering it will form the core of a highly monolithic building - is surprisingly roomy. This week will see the first on site pouring of the concrete for the integral cassette floors (see also our news item on this innovative system we developed), bringing the building to half of its eventual height. The full height will be reached shortly before the summer; completion is scheduled for the summer of 2013. more information on the project page.
