Design firestation Harderwijk approved

Last week, the City Counsel of Harderwijk approved our final design for the new firestation on the Verkeersweg. The 3.000 m2 building will house the vehicle stalls, changing rooms, workshops, training rooms and offices of the local- and regional fire brigade and the Red Cross. It will be a very sustainable building: due to – among others - the application of high quality insulation, biomass energy generation and heat&cold storage in the ground, the energy use of the building is reduced to 50% of government guidelines.

After the architect-selection process – in which Ector Hoogstad Architecten  was chosen for their proposed process approach over other architectural offices that had extensive experience in designing fire stations – in March, the preliminary design process started. In a series of design sessions with users of the building, a fully functioning design was created, with clear routes and without crossing traffic on site. Also the return-route was optimized, which resulted in choosing a drive-through 1st line vehicle stall. During the final design process, a fully integrated threedimensional building information model was built in close collaboration with installations advisor Boonstoppel Engineering and construction advisor DHV. Within a Lean planning process weekly Concurrent-Engineering sessions were held to ensure a high quality design within a very fast design process.

The buildings expression will suit the character of the fire brigade: shiny metal horizontal bands in a dynamic pattern. The main feature of the building are the red vehicles, that are set behind a serrated transparent façade to ensure their visibility from afar. Cantilevers and vertical louvers reduce heating from direct sunlight – while maintaining daylight admittance and views to the outside – and simultaneously enhance the expression of the fire station.
