January 2021 Although construction work had already started some time ago, the official groundbreaking ceremony for our Mindlabs project in Tilburg was postponed until today, due to COVID-19 circumstances. While Mindlabs focuses on digital technology, in particular different aspects of artificial intelligence such as virtual reality, robotics and language technologies, a digital ceremony, although slightly impersonal, could even regarded as fitting. In the former railyard of Tilburg, just north of Tilburg Central Station, Ector Hoogstad Architecten designed the transformation of the impressive Hal-70 into the beating heart of this new knowledge community, an exciting joint venture of various education institutes and business. In various labs visitors, students and researchers will explore new concepts and technologies together. The main structure of Hal-70 determines the architectural language of Mindlabs. A highly sustainable and flexible new wing with large open and high floors will be added on the east side; on the west side the building will be connected to Tilburg’s wellknown LocHal. Construction is projected to be completed by the end of 2021. In the mean time the Mindlabs community keeps growing: only last week the participation of Breda University of Applied Sciences was announced, a wonderful addition to future users Fontys, Tilburg University and ROC Midden Brabant.
