August 2017 The first phase of what is to become the world’s largest bicycle parking garage at Utrecht Central Station was opened for the public on Monday morning 7 August at 5am. For now there is room for ‘only’ 6000 bicycles, already making it the largest bicycle facility in the Netherlands. But the building is not finished yet! After the summer the number of places will be expanded to 7.500, and in 2018 the second part of the bicycle storage will be finished, bringing the grand total to 12,500 bicycles. By then the 17,100 sq meter space below the new Station Square – designed by the same team led by EHA – will beat the current title-holder, Kasai underground station in Tokyo.
Ector Hoogstad Architecten has designed the bicycle storage and Station Square in collaboration with Sant & Co (landscape designers) and Royal Haskoning DHV (engineers) and is also responsible for the overall phasing of the project’s execution. General contractor is BAM.
