October 2011 Recently, elderman Hugo de Jonge performed the opening ceremony of the new Melanchthon Mathenesse College in Rotterdam. This school for VMBO education is situated at the borders of the Spangen and Delfshaven districts, right next to the office of EHA, and we also designed it. The new building replaces parts of an older technical school, of which the large machine hall was re-used, and the assembly has redeveloped to become our own new workspace. Next to these to existing parts (and a third one; a former staircase that now contains building installations) we added a new L-shaped volume with a two story wing containing educational spaces and offices, another wing containing a full size sports hall and a new large community space in the centre. The new building seeks to architecturally connect to the existing parts, but uses its wide street front to act as an oversized shop window for the activities of the students. By creating highly transparent facades we have made the building look inviting and accessible, so that the surrounding neighbourhood feels free to use it for meetings, sports and other activities. For a more detailed description please visit the project page, or take a look at these video's that were made by the school's student themselves.
