October 2011 EHA was invited by the government of the Chinese province of Shandong to compete with a number of prestigious international architectural firms in an exclusive design competition for the new Shandong Art Gallery in Jinan. In our design, we propose to complete the rather traditional urban layout with a straightforward rectangular building mass. Architecturally, however, we choose to create a contrast with the two existing heavy looking buildings of the Shandong Museum and the Shandong Provincial Archives. Our design forms a cloud of exposition halls of different shapes and sizes, raised over a continuous park containing restaurants, shops and other amenities. An adventurous walk through the exposition cloud leads to a series of rooftop pavilions containing workshops, educational spaces, a cafe and an auditorium. A number of roof terraces offer a spectacular panorama of the city of Jinan and the nearby mountains. The facades are alternately closed, transparent or translucent and can be further manipulated by screens or lamellas, thus creating the possibility for every exposition to choose between natural or artificial light and between isolating or connecting the works on display with the urban context. Although highly praised, our design was unfortunately not selected to be realized.
