April 2020 Even in times of Coronavirus, Ballast Nedam continues to build Groningen University’s new Feringa Building – putting safety first of course! By now the foundations are already starting to paint an impressive picture of the enormous size of the building, which, with about 60,000 m2, definitely belongs to the XL category. The picture also shows to solution to an important challenge in this project: how do you construct an earthquake proof building that can accommodate laboratories with an extreme sensitivity to vibrations? One half of the answer is: by finding them a strategically smart position within the building. The other half of the answer was devised and calculated by the engineers of ABT, and is in principle not complicated: lots of reinforced concrete!
