January 2013 Last december the mayor and aldermen of Utrecht approved of the urban design and quality regulations for the area surrounding the new Station Square. Ector Hoogstad Architecten designed these plans in collaboration with landscape architects Sant & Co. The plans, together with the actual design for the square (including an enormous 12.000 bicycle parking underneath), constitute a framework for future developments, such as the new main entrance and plinths for the Hoog Catharijne shopping mall and the new building blocks adjacent to the new railway terminal that will provide the new Station Street with a clear profile and an enjoyable atmosphere. Also, regulations have been laid down for the programming of the plinths and the organisation of most of the traffic flow in the area. "We wanted Station Square to be comprehensible again", said Joost Ector during a so-called "city-talk" organised by Aorta. "These plans are all about creating comfortable public space and continuous connections with the historic center. We untie the logistical knot and lay down a new organisation that after decades of chaos will finally make this area as enjoyable as the rest of Utrecht's beautiful city centre." Construction of the new railway terminal is already underway, as can be seen here. According to the schedule the construction of the Station Square will start in 2014.
