At the Provada fair in Amsterdam a Golden Phoenix Award
for the best transformation project of the past year was awarded to MetaForum
. The jury was very enthusiastic about this metamorphosis in which a '60s machine hall was transformed to become the new main building of Eindhoven University of Technology with a new faculty building for the Department of Mathmatics and Computer Sciences built on top of it. "Everyone can study anywhere in the building. The hall has an calm, almost sacred atmosphere and this is absolutely a great achievement of Ector Hoogstad Architecten. The architect of the original building, Jacques Choisy, can not but be happy with the way his legacy was treated." Prizes in the two remaining categories were awarded to the Justus van Effen housing block in Rotterdam (renovation) and Strijp S, also in Eindhoven (urban redevelopment). "The Golden Phoenix awards really matter", says Joost Ector, who accepted the award on behalf of Ector Hoogstad Architecten. "We no longer automatically choose to build only brand new buildings. First we turn to see what we can do with the enormous supply of existing buildings. This approach is more sustainable, more economic and often more interesting from an architectural point of view. It contributes to more hybrid and layered cities, historically as well as spatially."
