April 2015 The education centre for students and teachers of the faculties of Science, Geosciences and Biomedical Sciences of Utrecht University – named after the prominent biologist Victor J. Koningsberger - opened its doors. The Victor J. Koningsberger building will be commissioned in steps. Students and staff already use the three lecture halls and the underlying garage for 1,650 bicycles. Over the next few months, they will gradually begin using more of the labs and other areas. The whole building will be operational by the time the new academic year begins in September.
The Victor J. Koningsberger building will form an education cluster in the northwest corner of the campus together with the existing Minnaert building and the Buys Ballot building. Ector Hoogstad Architecten designed the connection between the three buildings and the renovation of the Minnaert building, originally designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects. The renovation is expected to be completed in early 2017 and will improve the functionality and technical aspects of the building as well as improving its sustainability. Sustainability is also one of the main design principles of the education center. The transparent facade has an ingenious exterior sun screen to achieve the best balance between daylighting and energy management. In addition, the building is equipped with thermal storage, residual heat form the power station, solar panels and sustainable building materials.
This summer we show a photo series of the Victor J. Koningsberger Building.
