For the large-scale renovation of the MBO Utrecht Campus , Ector Hoogstad Architecten transformed the five existing university buildings into one contemporary knowledge landscape. The five renovated buildings and three new buildings are now connected through a new, vibrant and green inner street. In this urban village with eight building blocks, the street is the communal place for knowledge exchange and social encounters. Each of the building block houses one of the various education fields, such as ICT, Healthcare and Arts (the Herman Brood Academy). The introduction of the inner street with its green roof and skylights also provides a climate buffer, reducing the total energy consumption of the complex, while the PV-panels provide a considerable amount of renewable energy. Circular material usage was a key concept in the design. During the circular demolition, existing materials were used for the renovation while new materials were selected for their minimal environmental impact. A choice that resulted in the extensive use of wood.
